sec dimensions variable 2020 Working with a thirty second clip taken from a digitized family video, this project explores the complexity of mediated memory and the idea of an authentic self. The video and audio were carefully recreated before being edited together with the original using a variety of software and processes. Involving painstaking frame by frame manipulation and motion tracking the piece reveals the often hidden processes of video analytics. The two diptychs are installed opposite one another with a single channel audio playing. After the death of his wife, Arthur abandoned Erwin, leaving him to live with an abusive couple in Philadelphia. The letter was written to Erwin when he was 33 years old and just a year before Arthur died. Notes for a Son is a record of a month-long daily practice of trying to learn Arthur’s handwriting by copying the letter—practicing each word over and over. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) is a web service through which requesters can create human intelligence tasks (HITs) for workers to complete anonymously online. Through this platform AI developers task anonymous workers with annotating thousands of pictures, by “objectively” labeling the discrete objects they observe. To questions the presumptions of such utilities I created my own image identification HIT using personal family photos. Instead of asking them to refain from conjecture or emotional response I instead asked workers to infer what they thought was happening and to explain any personal responses they had to the images. ongoing project, Every Photo is an attempt to collect and organize every photograph ever taken of my son. I overlay one image at a time—scaling, rotating, and positioning them based on the size and orientation of his head. The project serves as a meditation on Lacan’s idea of the mirror stage and an inquiry into the impact that instantaneous photography has on one’s self-awareness and development.
